In the 1990 Democratic primary election, 32-year old Alderman Edwin Eisendrath of the 43rd ward challenged 80-year old Congressman Sidney Yates in the 9th congressional district. He claimed that Yates was too old and should be retired.

On election night, the young challenger lost by a large margin and called Yates to congratulate him on his victory. Rather than engage in conversation, the Congressman simply said, “Thank you, Edwin,” and hung up the phone.
