Alderman Bruce Young

In 1979, 44th Ward Alderman Dick Simpson honored his pledge to serve only two terms in the Chicago City Council. He backed Bruce Young, President of the Lakeview Citizens Council (LVCC), to succeed him.

Young won and, although voting and acting like the Independent politico he was, he adopted a less confrontational style than had Simpson.

Many of his supporters didn’t like that and compared him unfavorably with his predecessor.

He was disturbed by their comments and decided to quit before his term expired.

The Machine won a special election to replace him in 1981 and it has held the seat ever since.
