Burke's migrating ward

When Ed Burke was elected Alderman in 1969, following the death of the previous Alderman (his father), his south side ward was centered in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, and abutted the Dan Ryan Expressway on its eastern border.

It migrated westward in each of the next five remaps, following what remained of the rapidly decreasing White population of Chicago’s southwest side. The 14th Ward, still represented by Burke in 2019 at the beginning of his final term, reached almost to the city limits at Harlem Avenue and did not contain any part of the ward that had originally elected him.
