He didn't get any votes

State Representative Elroy Sandquist, Sr., died shortly before the 1970 general election, after ballots had already been printed. He held the sole GOP seat in a district that had elected two Democrats and one Republican.

Peter J. Harlib, who hoped to exploit the unexpected opportunity, placed a loudspeaker on his car and drove through the district on Election Day, asking Democratic precinct captains to secure write-in votes for him so he could win the soon-to-be-declared vacant position. (In those days, voters could write-in anybody. Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck were frequent vote-getters).

That effort failed and the deceased Sandquist was re-elected.

Harlib did not receive any votes. One write-in was cast for “Peter J.” The voter apparently ran out of room to write-in the entire name.
