Intentionally not voting

Sheldon Gardner was State Chair of the Independent Voters of Illinois (IVI) in 1972, and he also headed the campaign of Joe Lundy, who was running for the Democratic nomination for State Representative in an Evanston/Chicago north side district.

He said he wasn’t going to vote for Lundy in the primary election that year. In fact, he said he wasn’t going to vote at all.

He expected to be named the “Independent” member of the newly formed Illinois State Board of Elections by Governor Ogilvie and did not want to be identified as a participant in either political party election.

But Ogilvie was defeated for re-election and Gardner was not named to the Board.
