Dobry - just a decoy
Alan Dobry’s 1976 election was unexpected. He was a decoy. He had run for 5th Ward Democratic committeeman to distract the precinct captains from other races in the primary election,
He didn’t want to reform the party. His victory simply provided the opportunity to take a key position away from his political opponents.
He incorporated the name “5th Ward Regular Democratic Organization” to prevent the now-rump group he had defeated from continuing to use that name. And he (in the name of his new group) endorsed all of the IVI-backed candidates.
One of them was Republican Cook County State’s Attorney Bernard Carey.
