Sending a signal

The Democratic precinct captain in the home precinct of 50th Ward Committeeman Jerome Huppert gathered nearly one third of the vote in 1975 for Charlotte Dolins, the hapless challenger to Alderman Bernard Stone, the party-backed candidate in the municipal election.

It was, by far, her best precinct. But his effort was not intended to help Dolins. It was meant to signal to Stone that Huppert would fight any attempt to oust him from his Committeeman post.
