Setting his feet on fire

Following the 1983 mayoral election, newly elected 31st Ward Alderman, Miguel Santiago claimed that progressive activists in his ward were going to set his feet on fire if he didn’t ally with Mayor Washington. When asked how he would vote on the City Council reorganization, he had told them it was none of their business.

What activists actually said was that they would watch him closely and hold his feet to the fire.
