The end for Donald Mulack

Republican Donald Mulack was endorsed by Independents for Cook County Coroner in 1972. He advocated for an appointed, not elected, office and his proposal was adopted after he lost.

He ran for Cook County Sheriff in 1978 and was initially considered a highly qualified Reformer.

But, at a meeting of the Polish National Alliance, he was reported to have declared that there were too many Blacks and Jews employed in the Sheriff’s office.

Some supporters claimed he was referring to Sheriff jobs being used by the Machine to reward Black and Jewish campaign workers.

Still, many of his precinct volunteers thought he was fanning the flames of bigotry. Although his name appeared on Independent sample ballots, most IVI and IPO members did as little as possible for him after he uttered those words. He lost to incumbent Democrat Richard Elrod.
