The switcheroo
State Senator Esther Saperstein resigned her legislative seat in 1975 after narrowly winning the 49th Ward Aldermanic election. Michael Brady was appointed to fill the remainder of her term in the Rogers Park/West Rogers Park/Evanston district.
As the 1976 Democratic primary election approached, State Rep. Joe Lundy announced that he would run for the Senate seat. Machine Democrats knew Brady couldn’t beat him, so they pulled a switch.
Sen. Brady was slated for State Rep., and State Representative Arthur Berman ran for the State Senate. Berman beat Lundy in a close race.
