They didn't speak English

It was my senior year in high school and the first time I volunteered in a political campaign. A group of us were dispatched to the 47th ward to distribute information for Elmer Gertz, an Independent candidate for Delegate to the Illinois Constitutional Convention (Con-con).

 While knocking on doors, we encountered a number of people who didn’t understand English. They only spoke German.
