Too many Jews?

A Democratic precinct captain supporting the re-election of Mayor Richard J. Daley and opposing his major challenger, Ald. Bill Singer, in the 1975 mayoral primary election, distributed a flyer in a north side 47th ward precinct (when that area was more conservative than it is today).

It read: “William Singer is endorsed by the Independent Voters of Illinois (IVI). Here are the names of some of the leaders of the IVI,” and it listed them: “Samuel Ackerman, Milton Cohen, Lee Epstein, Jerrold Levin, and many, many more.”

“Read these names very carefully,” the letter instructed. “Do you want these men running your ward and precinct?”
