When ideology mattered
Chicago politics was once about honesty and good government, not about Progressive vs. Conservative issues.
But in 1978, progressive State Representative Alan Greiman was challenged in the Democratic Primary by an anti-choice conservative.
Although Greiman had been endorsed by the local Democratic Party Machine, it just ignored him, campaigning only for his running mate (who was anti-choice) in the multi-candidate race.
So, Independents (most of whom were Progressives), mounted a campaign on Greiman’s behalf.
And he won – by a lot.
Independents’ priorities then returned to honesty and good government.
