When Elmer Gertz, a well-known civil liberties attorney, was voted into the Chicago Senior Citizen Hall of Fame, I sent him a congratulatory letter. He was the first candidate I had ever volunteered for when he ran for Delegate to the Illinois Constitutional Convention (Con-con). He won.
Well, he sent me a letter, thanking me for my note, and expressing surprise that I would send it, saying “young people usually don’t think of these things.”
