Bullying businesses

It wasn’t unusual for merchants to be bullied into contributing to political campaign funds.

“We want you to buy an ad in Senator Carroll’s book,” the solicitor informed the store owner.

“Why should I do that?” was the response.

“You know,” the political guy said, as he looked around the store. “You could have a lot of building code violations here.”

“Then I’ll fix them,” the owner said. And he refused to purchase an ad.
