47th Ward Alderman Eugene Schulter filed for re-election in 2011 and then withdrew on the last day possible, following an ally’s submission of nominating petitions, hoping his initial presence on the ballot would deter viable challengers and guarantee victory to his chosen candidate.

But his sleight of hand didn’t work. His handpicked successor lost the election to Independent challenger, Ameya Pawar.
