Mell's ruse didn't work

Alderman Richard Mell resigned from the Chicago City Council mid-term in 2013. His daughter Deborah, a state representative, was then appointed by Mayor Emanuel to fill the now vacant aldermanic seat.

n 2016, having served ten terms as 33rd Ward Democratic Committeeman, Mell ran for an 11th term in 2016 expecting to win and then resign. The Cook County Democratic Central Committee, not the 33rd ward voters, would then select his replacement.

The ruse didn’t work. Aaron Goldstein beat Mell and became the Committeeman.
