Party loyalty in DuPage

Chicago Democrats demanded political loyalty for everything. Suburban Republicans were no different.

In 1977, the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference nominated one of its members to serve on the DuPage County Plan Commission. When the approval process appeared to be taking too long, the group asked the Commission to act more swiftly.

It responded by sending an application to the nominated member, as if that person were applying for a job.

It turned out the nominated Mayor, who was chosen in a non-partisan election, was a Democrat and the Plan Commission didn’t want him. Although the other Mayors were Republicans, they felt that partisanship should not play a role in municipal affairs.

Still, they were realistic. So, the nominated Mayor withdrew and was replaced with a GOP substitute who was soon approved by the Plan Commission.
