What Laurino called Byrne

City Hall employees could not believe that Jane Byrne had upset Mayor Bilandic in the 1979 municipal election. The Machine never lost. Never. Not ever. It was invincible.

Not so that year.

As 39th Ward Alderman Tony Laurino shuffled into the Council chamber for a meeting, he grumbled to the clerical staff about the election outcome.

“The Bitch didn’t beat me,” he muttered proudly. His ward had carried, narrowly, for Bilandic.

And several months passed before Machine troops stopped referring to Mayor Byrne as “the Bitch.”
