What's in a name?

When freshman State Representative Howard Carroll, a 50th Ward Democrat, ran for State Senator in 1972 in a reapportioned district that included most of Skokie, he plastered the suburban portion of his bailiwick with signs displaying his last name.

Not long before that election, the area had been represented by a Republican with the same name.

Carroll’s victory was pretty certain, but he wanted to capitalize on his name, just to be sure.
