Stevenson didn't care
When you have no chance of losing, you can say whatever you want.
At the 1974 IPO endorsement session for U.S. Senator, Adlai Stevenson III began by saying, “I’d like to talk about something that you may not care about.” And he droned on for most his allotted time about an issue that most of the audience did not care about.
Afterward, the group voted to extend his speaking time so he could address other issues and answer some of their questions.
